From the Director

We think of a philanthropist as someone who donates big sums of money, yet the word literally means “love of humankind.” All of us are capable of being philanthropists.

Piqua is lucky to have many philanthropists who go out of their way to show their “love of humankind.” Some are individuals; some are families; some are businesses or organizations. All of them are shining examples of the way to use our time, our money and our experience to make things better for everyone around us. Ultimately, we are at the same time making things better for ourselves.

The fourth annual “Cakes for a Cause”, sponsored by The Piqua Community Foundation, was an unqualified success thanks to the contributions of many who were willing to roll up their sleeves and help raise money for our grant making fund. Check out the photos of the 2009 cakes and the story on the news page, and you can see what I mean – fabulous cakes, great incentives and hard-working volunteers raised over $10,000! Proceeds will help increase the number and size of grants which can be made by The Foundation in the future, making all who participated in the event “philanthropists”.

Please take a moment to read about our recent grant recipients on the grants page – they and those they serve are the real beneficiaries of those amazing cakes!
