Welcome to The Piqua Community Foundation
CAKES FOR A CAUSE - 2009 The Fourth Annual “Cakes for a Cause” drew hundreds of interested viewers to the Miami Valley Centre Mall to enjoy seventy-six cakes on display. The Piqua Community Foundation sponsors the event to benefit their Piqua Community Fund; the fund makes grants twice each year to charitable organizations that improve life for local residents. More than $65,000 in grants were made last year, and more than $400,000 in grants has been given since the first grants were made in 1995. On Thursday, April 23, the cakes were delivered and staged in the mall concourse. The creatively designed cakes were donated to the cause by local businesses, individuals, schools and not-for-profit organizations. Cakes were accompanied by “incentives” – added by the donors – that significantly increased the values of the cakes. The colorful, imaginative cakes depicted everything from a slot machine to a puppy dog, from a blue jay in its nest to an accountant’s desk. Cakes represented business logos as well as sculpted cakes that took the shape of a ghostly Trick-or-Treater, a Harley Davidson motorcycle, a phonograph complete with record, a lobster, a massage table, and a giant ear of corn, just to name a few. Silent bids were taken at the mall Thursday evening and Friday during the day. From noon Friday until 5:00 PM, the auction was broadcast live on W.P.T.W. radio. Each twenty-minute time slot included the auctioning of several cakes, with cakes and incentives going to the highest bidder at the end of the time slot. Joe Neves and John Leese of W.P.T.W. facilitated the radio broadcast which featured Foundation Board president John Brown and board members Dan Ramer and Dan French. Those visiting the mall could vote for their favorite cake, with the top vote-getter earning “The People’s Choice” award. The 2009 People’s Choice award was given to Piqua Lumber and Hardware for their “Decks – We do that!” cake featuring a friendly cook-out. The cake was created by Dobo’s Delights Bake Shoppe. This year, Mullenbrock and Associates donated a beautiful silver and crystal People’s Choice traveling trophy, and a plaque to be displayed at the Foundation office bearing the names of all of the People’s Choice winners through the years. The Theme Prize, best representation of “These are a Few of My Favorite Things”, was awarded to the Miami Valley Centre Mall, for their entry depicting a day’s shopping treasures. It was also baked by Dobo’s Delights. Stacy and Benny Scott and Dimi Nicholas won the High Bid trophy. Their cake, representing a sand pail at the beach, came with a week long stay at their beautiful, 3-bedroom condo in Palm Coast, Florida. The cake brought in an all-time high bid of $1250. The Piqua Community Foundation mission includes encouraging charitable giving to benefit citizens of Piqua. The Foundation expresses sincere thanks to all those who gave to benefit the community through this event – those who donated cakes, purchased cakes, volunteered their time and expertise to the event, and to those who attended or listened and got caught up in the “Cakes for a Cause” excitement. The event generated over $10,000 for the Piqua Community Fund.
