BOOKS FOR PIQUA BABIES Families in Miami County who bring home a new baby may receive a special visit – not from the stork, but from a Miami County Health Department nurse bearing a special gift of “Books for Babies”. Diane Apgar, shown, displays the contents of a “Books for Babies” kit, supplied by Altrusa International of Troy to first-time parents. Altrusa received a grant from the Piqua Community Foundation last fall, allowing these kits to be delivered to Piqua parents as the Health Department nurses make their visits. The kits were developed to encourage parents to read to their children, giving them a jump start on the learning process and teaching children that books provide their key to education, according to Mary Davis of the Altrusa Club. The Community Foundation Grants allowed approximately 50 kits to be delivered to Piqua families this year. |
