Piqua Teens Learn About Leadership Why are 23 local teenagers donning HazMat suits? It’s all part of their participation in the Piqua Teen Leadership program! Sponsored by the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce, the program offers participants the opportunity to learn about interpersonal communication, social skills and the culture of their community. The 2007-2008 program was funded in part by a grant from The Piqua Community Foundation.
Local high school Juniors and Seniors spent one complete school day for seven consecutive months participating in the program. They took on-site tours of local businesses, visited city, county and state government offices, and enacted a mock commission meeting that was broadcast on Piqua TV5. During the city government tour, the teens received HazMat (hazardous materials) training from members of the Piqua Fire Department. Students also learn by doing in the area of grant making. Through the “Teens Taking Charge” program, the students had the opportunity to screen and prioritize grant applications, conduct interviews and make funding decisions for organizations that benefit local youth programming.
Lisa Whitaker, president of the Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce expressed gratitude to The Piqua Community Foundation with these thoughts; “We are very fortunate to have received the grant. This program could not exist without the help and funding from our community.” |
