Grant Information

INFORMATION FOR GRANT APPLICANTS

The Piqua Community Foundation accepts grant applications from any charitable not-for-profit organization meeting the following criteria:

  • The organization submits documentation of its 501 (c) (3) status or equivalent
  • The organization adheres to a mission that is religious, educational, scientific, literary or charitable in nature
  • The project for which funds are being sought must benefit the residents of Piqua, Ohio

The Foundation makes Mini-Grants (of $500 or less) and Standard Grants (more than $500) twice each year.
Deadlines for grants are as follows:

  • Mini-Grants – March 15 and September 15 each year
  • Standard Grants – March 31 and September 30 each year

YEA! Grants (Youth Enrichment Activities Grants) of up to $1000 are made once each year, with support from the Jacob G. Schmidlapp Trusts, Fifth Third Bank, Trustee. The focus of YEA! Grants should be innovative, inventive programming to benefit youth in the Piqua area. The program or project should be for an activity beyond that already being provided in the school or organization. The Foundation is looking for creative programs not able to be funded within the existing budget. Required follow-up reporting may include a brief presentation of the project and its outcomes for Foundation donors. Deadline for YEA! Grants is September 15 each year.

Applications must be presented using the Community Foundation’s grant application forms. Mini-Grant and Grant applications are available by calling, writing, faxing or emailing the Foundation office using the numbers and addresses listed below. Completed applications must be delivered personally or by mail, and are not accepted by email or fax. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

The Foundation does not make grants to an organization, project or program in consecutive years. In most cases, The Foundation does not make grants for salaries or for general operating expenses.

Applicants are invited to contact the Foundation’s executive director with any questions or concerns.

NEW GRANTS TO THE COMMUNITY

The Piqua Community Foundation presented checks totaling $36,607 to local organizations at their annual meeting held Tuesday, November 13, 2007. Seven Youth Enrichment Activities grants (YEA! Grants), four Mini-Grants, and nine standard grants were made as part of the Foundation’s second granting cycle of the year.

Students from Washington Intermediate School displayed their Speed Stacking Skills prior to the meeting. A grant from The Community Foundation in 2006 funded the purchase of their stacking sets.

Those receiving YEA! Grants this fall include
· Bennett Intermediate School for the “Buckle Down” program
· Bennett Intermediate School for positive behavior incentives
· Favorite Hill Primary for third grade trip to the Freedom Center
· Lehman High School for the art department tile mural project
· Lehman Music Boosters for a “Smart Music” computer program and upgrade
· Piqua Junior High School for a projector for writing instruction
· Springcreek Primary School for library books by their artist in residence

Those receiving Mini Grants were:
· Favorite Hill Primary School for CHADD (ADD/ADHD) manuals
· Lehman Catholic High School for the Science Olympiad program
· Piqua High School Library for developing a reading corner
· Piqua City Schools for easels for classroom use and display

Standard Grants were awarded to:
· Eagles’ Wings Stable for certification training for the program director
· Miami County Recovery Council for the juvenile drug court program
· Mission: WWII Veterans to Washington, D.C. for veterans’ trips
· Piqua Area Chamber of Commerce for the Teen Leadership program
· Piqua Catholic School for assistance in purchasing a new convection oven
· Piqua Compassion Network for office equipment and software
· Piqua High School Music Boosters for music department needs
· The Salvation Army for the Summer Feeding Program
· Rehabilitation Center for Neurological Development for floor cleaning machines


The Piqua Community Foundation makes grants to not-for-profit organizations through two annual distribution cycles. The next deadline for mini-grants is March 15, 2008; the deadline for standard grants will be March 31, 2008. Applications for either grant are available by contacting the Foundation office at 615-9080 or at piquacf@sbcglobal.net.

Grants made in May 2007

The Piqua Community Foundation distributed grants totaling $30,201 in a ceremony at the YWCA of Piqua in May 2007. Those receiving grants were:

  • The City of Piqua Police Department for their internet safety project
  • Goodwill/Easter Seals of the Miami Valley for renovations at Sunrise Center
  • Lehman Catholic High School for website development
  • Mainstreet Piqua for signs honoring Piqua’s Preserve America designation
  • Music Warehouse for rental of lighting and sound equipment for Summer Showcase 2007
  • Piqua Area United Way for a new computer and data transfer
  • Piqua’s Bicentennial Committee for expenses staging the Founders’ Day celebrations
  • Piqua Crime Stoppers for reward money that helps catch perpetrators
  • Piqua High School Muse Machine to help fund assemblies
  • Protecting Our Waterways for summer 2007 Great Sweep
  • Wood Street Community Development for their summer enrichment program

Those receiving mini-grants were:

  • Bennett Intermediate School for Scholastic News for 6th graders
  • Favorite Hill Primary for Survival Skills curriculum
  • Favorite Hill Primary for a theatre enrichment trip for 3rd graders
  • High Street Primary for soft tone phones for 3rd grade reading advancement
  • Lehman High School for a literature diversity unit for sophomores
  • Mental Health Association of Miami County for educational materials
  • Piqua Historical Area to assist in funding summer events
  • Piqua City Schools for English as a Second Language materials
  • Piqua High School for the Academic Wall of Fame
  • Piqua High School for fishing equipment for physical education classes
  • Piqua High School for establishing a pep club
  • Piqua Neighborhood Improvement for the Shawnee Community Garden
  • Tri-County Suicide Prevention Coalition for educational materials

The Foundation’s Distribution Committee will meet next in October 2007. All grant applications received prior to the September deadlines will be considered at that time. Any 501(c) 3 organization interested in receiving application information should contact the Foundation office for more information.

Grants made in November 2006

The Piqua Community Foundation directors approved twenty-three grants totaling $33,067 in November 2006.

Those receiving grants and their projects include:
Altrusa International of Troy – “Books for Babies” materials for Piqua moms
Bennett Intermediate School –hands-on math activities in fourth grade
Bennett Intermediate School – support of the Leadership Club
Bethany Center – floor cleaning equipment
Child Care Choices – The Story Lady project for Piqua child care providers
City of Piqua – support of the Hotel/Library restoration project
Community Housing of Darke, Miami & Shelby Counties – furnishings for Piqua group home
Footprints on the Heart – support and assistance for Piqua cancer patients
Miami County Y.M.C.A. – capital improvement projects at the Piqua branch

Mini-Grant projects being funded include:
Greene Street Day Care/Preschool – purchase a new multi-child stroller
High Street Elementary – purchase sets of dictionaries
High Street Elementary – purchase sound/spelling and letter cards
Miami Shelby County Young Life – support for teen activities after football games
Nicklin Learning Center – support for English as a Second Language families
Piqua Catholic School – sixth grade math enrichment
