Fall 2006 Grants
The Piqua Community Foundation presented checks totaling $33,067
to local organizations at their annual meeting held Tuesday, November
14, 2006. Eight Youth Enrichment Activities grants (YEA! Grants), six
Mini-Grants, and nine standard grants were made as part of the Foundation’s
second granting cycle of the year.
Abigail Pooe-Jordan, a spring grant recipient representing
The African Connection, displayed a quilt made by fifth graders at Washington
Intermediate School as part of the project funded with the grant she had
received. Each student created a quilt block using the theme “I
Have a Dream”, the quote made famous by the late Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr. The blocks were joined into a quilt that will be placed on display
at Washington School.
Those receiving YEA! Grants this fall include
Edison Community College Fine/Performing Arts departments to bring “Hamlet”
live to Edison,
Edison Early Childhood/Child Development departments to present a Madcap Puppets
performance
Nicklin Learning Center for their Earobics Speech/Language project
Piqua Catholic School for (1) the Chess in the School project and (2) for a
GEMSS science project
Piqua City Schools to produce Student Art Cards
Piqua High School Environmental Science for their recycling project
Washington Intermediate School to start a Speed Stacking program
Those receiving Mini Grants were:
Greene Street Day Care/Preschool to purchase a multi-child stroller
High Street Elementary School for (1) Dictionaries and (2) Sound/Spelling
and Letter Cards
Miami Shelby County Young Life to support their Post-football game activities
for teens
Nicklin Learning Center for support of “English as a Second Language”
families
Piqua Catholic School for a 6th Grade math enrichment project
Standard Grants were awarded to:
Altrusa International Inc. of Troy for their Books for Babies project
in Piqua
Bennett Intermediate School for (1) 4th grade Hands on Math activities
and (2) Leadership Club support
Bethany Center to purchase industrial floor cleaning equipment
Child Care Choices for their Story Lady project
City of Piqua to support the Hotel Library Restoration Project
Community Housing of Darke, Miami & Shelby Cos. To purchase furnishings
for their Piqua group home
Footprints on the Heart, Inc. to provide assistance for Piqua cancer patients
in need
Miami County Y.M.C.A. for capital improvement projects for the Piqua Branch
The Piqua Community Foundation makes grants to not-for-profit organizations
through two annual distribution cycles. The next deadline for mini-grants
is March 15, 2007; the deadline for standard grants will be March 31,
2007. Applications for either grant are available by contacting the Foundation
